A report released today by the Pew Internet and American Life Project says US workers are increasingly using instant messaging (IM) in the workplace, with approximately 11 million Americans logging into an IM program daily, Internetnews.com reported.
The study says 53 million Americans (43 percent of all US Internet users) report using IM with the application having an “especially apparent” appeal among young adults and technology enthusiasts.

While the report is to to do IM growth in the US, I would say you could also broadly project the findings to reflect what’s happening in some European countries.
