Using Gmail with Outlook

Coming soon – the ability to access your Gmail account via desktop applications like Outlook.

The Industry Standard reports that Google will roll out POP3 support gradually over the coming weeks to Gmail users, who will be able to use the feature to download email from Gmail servers to email applications on PCs and wireless devices.

With POP3 support, users will be able to transfer their server-based Gmail messages to a client-side email application such as Outlook and have the messages stored on their local hard drive and thus accessible when they are offline. Users with wireless devices that have POP3-compliant e-mail clients will also be able to download their Gmail messages to PDAs or mobile phones.

This is the complete opposite to Microsoft’s approach with Hotmail. For as long as I can remember, you could manage your Hotmail account from within Outlook. Last month, Microsoft said that POP3 support for free Hotmail accounts is being withdrawn.

Speaking of Hotmail, the present capacity limit of 2Mb on free accounts is being upgraded to 250Mb, as every Hotmail user will no doubt know by now, plus being able to include larger-size file attachments. (Gmail already offers 1Gb of space with 10Mb file attachments.)
